Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in San Diego may have faced some tough challenges throughout their lives as a result of their sexual orientation or nontraditional gender identities.
Some men and women might not have had the support from their families that they would have liked to receive when coming out. Others might have been bullied at school. And some folks may have even experienced discrimination in the workplace as a result of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Fortunately, more workplaces in California are being held accountable for violating employees’ rights in the workplace when it comes to sex, gender and transgender discrimination. And a new report suggests that San Diego is actually one of the friendliest places for members of the LGBT community to live and work.
The report was released by the Human Rights Campaign last week. To rate how friendly cities are toward the LGBT community, the organization analyzed several different factors including workplace practices and policies, non-discrimination laws and municipal employees’ rights and benefits. Other factors that were used for the Municipal Equality Index report included the positions local leaders held on rights issues involving lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender folks.
The Human Rights Campaign then used a point system to score cities based on the different factors that were analyzed with the highest score being 100 and the lowest being zero. San Diego, along with three other cities in California, scored 100. The lowest-ranking city in California was Rancho Mirage with a score of 44.
Next year, the organization plans to include more cities in the report.
