Male coach alleges gender discrimination at UC Berkley

When people think of gender discrimination, they may assume that it is women being discriminated against. However, gender discrimination can involve people of all genders and, like many forms of wrongful termination, can affect just about any working person at any level of their profession. A Southern California employment law attorney can help in cases of suspected wrongful termination.

Local college sports followers may be familiar with the story of the UC Berkley women’s water polo team. Last year, their former coach filed a lawsuit against the school’s athletic directors. The former coach, a male, alleges gender discrimination after he claims that a female former athletic director at the school said she wanted women to coach women. For their part, the university’s athletics department have denied the accusations, calling them “demonstrably false” and “fictitious” in a statement.

According to the former coach’s lawsuit, he was mistreated despite having an impressive coaching record at the university. He began leading the women’s team back in 2005, but resigned last August. He is 62 years old and was replaced by a 39-year-old female. During his time coaching, his suit claims, he amassed a 227-98 record for the team and also helped increase its rate of graduating students. Now, the former coach is pursuing lost wages of over $1 million.

Gender discrimination can impact men as well as women. Other forms of discrimination, such as those based on religion, race or other aspects can also adversely affect many Southern California residents and result in wrongful dismissal. Getting help from a wrongful termination attorney can help those in any profession assert their rights.
